Statement of intent
What theme I am going to do for my project
My chosen theme for my GCSE main project is going to be around ‘Landscape’ and in particular, looking at the different types of landscapes. To start with, I am going to research Landscapes such as lakes, trees, miniature Landscape, urban landscape and possibly even my own local Landscape.I have chosen to do this theme because I'm surrounded by different landscapes which means I will be able to get a wide range of different images.
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme
In order to produce a successful, creative and individual final main project, I need to start by doing some in-depth research around my chosen theme. The way I am going to do this is go onto the internet and research famous photographers who use landscape as their theme. I will also look at magazines and books to inspire me. I hope to create mood board, mind maps, to show my ideas as they progress. Add 3 names of famous photographers.
I hope to explore lots of different options so that I build up an intricate understanding of my chosen theme. I need to have a wide range of research using a variety of different media, to ensure that my project is well informed and in-depth. This will allow me to create a successful project and will help me inspire/ influence me
My main aim is to create a project that is very personal to me and one where I can explore and develop my photography techniques and skills. I am going to use my weebly personal photography website to record all of my ideas.
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to capture a wide range of different shoots for this project. In school I will be able to do some studio shoots that explore texture in the landscape, such as bark, moss, lichen and stone.
I can also go to my local area and document the landscape around me. This could be a good contrast to the images I took in year 10 when we went to the Lake District and focused on capturing the natural landscape, focusing on the autumn colours and soft light.
I could use my portrait techniques and combine it with landscape to create my own fantasy worlds. The main thing I would like to do is to
take my work on a journey and create a collage landscape.
Which artist and photographers am I going to research?
What techniques with the camera and photoshop am I going to use to develop my theme
Through my project I intend to use as many processes and techniques as possible to gain a high quality project. When I am using my camera I will leave it on the manual setting so that I can change / control the images I am taking. If I am taking photos outside, I will have to constantly check my iso, white balance, shutter speed, and adjust when needed.
When I am using photoshop I hope to use: Layers, opacity, brush tools, dodge and burn, saturation, sharpener, blur tool, spot healing tool.
I could use my mobile phone to extend my knowledge further and manipulate images using Snapseed,Lens Flare. Using these different techniques will extend my knowledge and work.
What do I have to learn more about in doing this project?
By doing this project, I hope to learn more about the theme of Landscape, but also how to take my work on a journey and create a really personal and meaningful project. In order to do this I am going to use my mobile phone.
What do you see as your final gallery of images being?
For my final set of images I think I would like to create a fantasy landscape .

Context:
Carr Clifton is an American landscape, nature and wilderness photographer. Exhibitions including Carr's photography have been displayed at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, The Nikon House, San Diego Museum of Natural History, Mountain Light Gallery and The California Academy of Science. His photos are of endangered wild landscapes in America's wilderness. Clifton has worked extensively with local, national and international conservation organizations helping to communicate important conservation objectives.
Connections:
I like Carr Clifton work because it has colour and stands out. It has detail. Carr clifton has similar work to mine because I like my work in colour and also like it to stand out. When people see it I want it to bring attention to people that love photography. In my opinion I think most of his pictures are amazing also in focus and have a lot of colour which makes it more noticeable. However some of his pictures look the same or have the same detail.
Inspiration:
I am going to try and take photos like his to show that I am intrigued with his work and how everything stands out so I am gonna try and do the same thing. I want my outcomes to look like his to show that I am interested in his pictures. I want to have a go at doing the pictures that Carr Clifton does of capturing the reflection of the landscape on the water by using a wide place to take pictures I can then try trying to take the pictures in the same way Carr Clifton does but different types of places
Composition:
Carr Clifton has used the rule of thirds in this photograph he has split the image up horizontally as foreground, middle ground, background. It is a large depth of field of f/32 because all of the image is in focus. In the foreground there is a lake and in the middle ground there is mounting and a bit of ice and in the distance there is an orange sky and a couple of mounting. In my opinion Carr Clifton have used a tripod to create a precise composition of the landscape. I believe Carr Clifton has used white balance of standard shade because the photograph was taken in the evening with no addition lighting, I believe Carr Clifton has edited this photo in photoshop to enhance the is blue tones in the sky, and the blue hue Carr. Lift on has used aperture of . Carr Clifton has taken this image at eye level to capture the reflection of the ice and mountings in the water creating a strong leading line across the center of the photograph.

Carr Clifton has taken this image at this angle to create a banishing point from the leading lines of the pontoon. The rule of thirds is used in some of his photos. They are strong leading lines. My own phots
Flowers
Worst photoThis is my worst photo because I haven't focused on the berry correctly I use of used a lager F stop F/8. I could of used a whiter white balance to make my image brighter and clearer. I could of used compositional rules like strong leading lines to make it better.
|
Best photoThis is the best photo because it is in focused and the berry's stand out. I use F stop 5.6 to focus on the berry's and the foreground. I made sure that the water droplets standout. The read against the green background really standout because there really complimentary colours.
|
I inverted the colours so that everything was either red to black through getting rid of all the green and yellow colour.
|
I over exposed the white balance in the picture. To was out the yellow and green colour in the image.
|
Highlighting the red. Washed out the background with a
speia. |
Water
Worst photo |
Best photo |
This is the worst photo because the photo isn't in focus and there isn't much in it. And it doesn't look water because I have used to of a small F stop. I haven't used the right white balance because it was to dark. I should of used the fluorescent.
|
This is my best photo because it is in focus and looks interesting. You can see the water move because I have used a longer shutter speed. I have used F stop 5/8 because it has a larger depth of filed.
|
Leaves
WorstThis is my worst photo because I don't really know what I was talking the picture off. I should of used F stop 5/8. I should of used a whiter white balance like shade because it was cloudy.
|
BestThis is my best photo because it is in focus and also has a blur to it. I used the F stop 5.6. I have used the rule of thirds. I have used contrasting colours as they are really bright.
|
I washed out all the colours for the background to be white
|
I used magic cut to use more colours. Made it more bright and prettier to look at.
|
Still picture
WorstThis picture is the worst because I was trying to get the background to blur. I should of used the F stop 2.8. The image is quite dark I should of used a whiter white balance like auto. however there is some strong leading lines and a great focal point on the tree.
|
BestThis picture is the best because you can see the leaves and the blur background. I used the F stop 5.6. The bright colours of the leaves are the focal point against the background. You can also see what's in the background like trees.
|
I used layers to create this peace of work through editing each individual bit of work I did.
Swans
In this image I used colour balance and experimented with tailoring the colour identity. on the red green yellow on the shadows, midtones, highlights.

Plans for my finally
After with experimenting taking landscape photography in the lake district and Blackpool, taking photographs of man made textures. I want to focus on the fine details of textures when editing my ideas to show case these interesting shapes. I am going to learn though this tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOz9F4RhB9k to create kaleidoscope patterns with my up close images of natural textures. I am going to experiment with the colours, tones and shadows of the images to enhance the shape of the textures and make them psychedelic which imitate the kaleidoscope. I want to use bright and contrasting colours because its bright like my personality for example like blue, pink, red, green

Evaluation
My theme was landscape and the textures were man made and natural. We went to the lake district in autumn where I took photos of cherries, water, trees, leaves, swans, boats, flowers, fog, rocks and wood. I also went to Blackpool. I want to go to other locations but because of Covid it stopped me taking photos of my other locations. I enjoyed taking photos. It was something I didn't take much of at first but it’s something I enjoy more and I got better at it. I also enjoy going to different locations and also seeing different places to take pictures instead of the same pictures around Manchester. I have learnt how to make my pictures brighter and darker by using white balance depending on the lighting in the location and also certain shutter speeds it makes my pictures look better. I have also learnt to experiment with aperture to get a shorter depth of field for close ups of the subjects. I want to learn how to use different skills in photo pea. I would like to learn how to use the magic cut tool to edit my images to style other photographers. I researched carr clifton because I really enjoy his photographs of landscapes and the way he captures vivid and vibrant colours in landscape. From researching carr clifton I learnt how to pay attention to capturing leading lines and using the rule of thirds within my photography. I also tried to imitate the way he splits his photographs of landscape up during focus on the foreground, middle ground, background. The most successful part of my project is taking close up photographs of flowers, leaves and natural textures and manipulating them in photo pea to create kaleidoscope patterns. A problem I encountered was Covid 19 it stopped me and Chloe going to London which was an opposite theme of urban to the lake district which was rural. I learnt during my journey on this project to take better photos using compositional rules and also how to use photo pea to edit my images. If I had a chance to do it differently I would start with taking photos so I have a better idea of what I would be wanting to do with my final project.
